Talking to Your Funeral Home about Cremation

If you are considering cremation for a lost loved one or for yourself while you’re pre-planning your funeral, your funeral home can help you make the right decision. They can explain the process and your options for funeral services or memorial ceremonies as well as your options for urns and burial. Here are some of the questions you may want to ask your funeral home about cremation.

Where Is the Cremation Performed?
Some funeral homes have their own facilities, while others use an outside crematorium. If they use an outside service, be sure to ask which facility it is and how often they verify the crematorium’s licensure. Be wary if the funeral home does not closely vet the outside services, as you should feel confident that the process is being handled appropriately.

Can I Have a Funeral?
Many people mistakenly believe that cremation means that you cannot have funeral services. In reality, you can plan a ceremony in any way you wish. You can have a viewing before the cremation and a funeral after, or have the cremation performed first and simply have a funeral service. You can also opt to forgo a funeral in favor of a later memorial ceremony, or simply have the cremation performed without any ceremony at all. There are also multiple options for the cremains. They can be placed in an urn, divided among multiple urns for family members, used in cremation jewelry, scattered, or placed in a mausoleum.

How Do I Create a Memorial?
Even if you do not have a grave, you can still create a memorial to visit in honor of your loved one. Benches, flat memorials, pedestals, posts, and other monuments are all options. You can also choose a Hawaiian tree legacy, in which a tree is planted in your loved one’s name, or create a tribute video.
